How to convert WAV to MP3

Three steps, all in your browser.

1. Choose your WAV files

Drop one or more WAV files, up to 2 GB each: mixes from a music program, recorder files or samples. They are read on your device.

2. Pick the bitrate

MP3 at 192 kbps is chosen for you. Take 320 kbps for a mix you want to share at its best, or FLAC to stay lossless.

3. Convert and download

Press Convert. Each MP3 has the WAV's name with the .mp3 extension.

About the formats

WAV – Waveform Audio

Uncompressed audio, the format music programs and field recorders save. A minute of CD-quality WAV (44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo) takes about 10.6 MB; 24-bit and 96 kHz files are larger still.

MP3 – MPEG-1 Audio Layer III

Compressed audio that every device plays. At 192 kbps a minute takes about 1.4 MB, about a seventh of a CD-quality WAV, and most listeners can't tell them apart.

Smaller but still lossless: FLAC

If you need every detail, for mastering or an archive, convert to FLAC instead: it is lossless and usually about half the size of the WAV. M4A (AAC at 256 kbps) is the other choice for iPhones.

Why people convert WAV to MP3

Send a mix or a demo

A four-minute song is around 40 MB as WAV and under 6 MB as MP3, small enough for e-mail, chat apps and quick listening on a phone.

Recorder and podcast files

Field recorders and audio interfaces record WAV. Convert interviews, rehearsals and podcast episodes to MP3 before sharing or publishing.

Free up space

Convert a folder of old WAV recordings or a sample library you only listen to; keep the WAVs you still edit.

Find the song in a recording

Recorded music you can't name? Convert it and press Identify this song: the audio opens in the AHA Music song finder.

WAV to MP3: frequently asked questions

How the converter works and what it can do.

How do I convert WAV to MP3?

Choose one or more WAV files above, keep MP3 selected (or pick a bitrate), press Convert to MP3 and download the result. It runs in your browser, with no upload and no queue.

Which bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps is the default and sounds like the WAV to most listeners. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 quality and the usual choice for sharing a finished mix; 128 kbps is enough for speech.

How much smaller is the MP3?

A minute of CD-quality WAV is about 10.6 MB; at 192 kbps the MP3 is about 1.4 MB, around seven times smaller. At 320 kbps it is about four and a half times smaller.

Can I convert 24-bit or 96 kHz WAV files?

Yes. High-resolution WAVs are converted too. MP3 can store up to 48 kHz, so a 96 kHz file is converted to a sample rate MP3 supports. Keep the original WAV, or convert it to FLAC, for mastering.

Can I convert several WAV files at once?

Yes, up to 20 files at a time, each up to 2 GB. They are converted one after another with the same settings, and each gets its own download button.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Only the audio engine (about 31 MB) is downloaded, once; unreleased mixes and recordings never leave your device.

Can I convert WAV to FLAC instead?

Yes. Choose FLAC before converting: it keeps the sound exactly and is usually about half the size of the WAV. FLAC and WAV output can be up to 30 minutes per file.

Is it free?

Yes. It needs no account, adds no watermark and does not limit how many files you convert.
