About the formats
MP4 and its sound
An MP4 holds a picture track and a sound track, usually AAC. An M4A is the same kind of file with the sound only, which is why it is the natural audio format to take out of an MP4.
M4A – AAC audio
M4A plays in Apple Music, iTunes, on iPhones and iPads, and on most Android phones. At 256 kbps AAC sounds very close to the original and takes a fifth less space than a 320 kbps MP3.
MP3, WAV and FLAC
MP3 plays on every device, including old car stereos. WAV and FLAC keep the sound exactly for editing (up to 30 minutes per file).

What quality is the M4A?
AAC at 256 kbps, the bitrate Apple uses for songs in the iTunes Store. It can't sound better than the sound track in the video.
M4A or MP3: which should I choose?
M4A for Apple devices, Apple Music and GarageBand; it is smaller than a 320 kbps MP3 at similar quality. MP3 if the file has to play on older car stereos and players.
Can I convert MOV or other videos to M4A?
Yes. MOV from iPhones, M4V, WEBM, MKV and 3GP are converted the same way, up to 2 GB each.
Can I make an iPhone ringtone from it?
