About the formats

MP4 – MPEG-4 Part 14

A container for video, audio, subtitles and cover pictures, used by phones, cameras and most video sites. Its sound is usually AAC. Converting to MP3 keeps only the sound, in a format every player, car stereo and editor accepts.

MP3 – MPEG-1 Audio Layer III

The most widely supported compressed audio format. At 192 kbps a minute of stereo music takes about 1.4 MB.

WAV, M4A and FLAC

WAV is uncompressed and opens in every editor. FLAC is lossless and about half the size of WAV. M4A is AAC audio (here at 256 kbps), the format iPhones and iTunes use.

MP4 to MP3: frequently asked questions

How the converter works and what it can do.

How do I convert MP4 to MP3?

Choose one or more MP4 files above, keep MP3 selected (or pick a quality), press Convert to MP3 and download the result. The conversion runs in your browser, so it starts at once, with no upload and no queue.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The audio is extracted inside your browser by a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Only the audio engine itself (about 31 MB) is downloaded, once, and then cached. Your files never leave your device and nothing is stored anywhere.

Which files can I convert?

Video and audio files your browser can open, including MP4, MOV, M4V, WEBM, MKV, 3GP, M4A, WAV, OGG and FLAC, up to 2 GB each. The result is MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC.

Which MP3 quality should I choose?

192 kbps is the default and sounds like the original for most music. 320 kbps keeps the most detail if you plan to edit the audio; 128 kbps is enough for speech and makes the smallest files. The MP3 can't sound better than the audio in the video.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 files; they are converted one after another with the same settings, and each gets its own download button.

Is it free, and is there a limit?

It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. Each file can be up to 2 GB. WAV and FLAC files can be up to 30 minutes long; MP3 and M4A have no length limit, though long videos take longer on a phone.

Are the title and artist kept?

Yes. Tags in the file, such as title and artist, are copied to the new file. Cover pictures are not, because the picture track is dropped.

How do I find out which song is in my video?

After converting, press Identify this song next to the file. The audio opens in the AHA Music song finder without choosing the file again; a part with clear music, without talking over it, gives the best match.
