How to cut an MP3 or any audio file

Three steps, all in your browser.

1. Choose a file

MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC or a video such as MP4 or MOV, up to 2 GB. The file is read on your device, not uploaded.

2. Pick the part

Drag the two handles on the waveform, or type the start and end time to a tenth of a second. Play the selection to check where it starts and stops.

3. Cut and download

Choose MP3 or WAV, add a short fade if you like, and press Cut audio. The new file downloads with its original name plus "-cut".

What people cut audio for

Find the song in a long recording

Cut the chorus out of a voice memo, a video or a podcast, then send just that part to the song finder with one click. A clean part without talking over it matches more often.

Make a ringtone or alarm sound

Pick the best 20 to 30 seconds of a song, add a fade in and out, and save it as MP3. Android phones accept an MP3 file as a ringtone or notification sound.

Shorten a podcast, interview or voice note

Remove the silence at the start, a false start or the end of a recording, or keep only the quote you want to share.

Prepare clips for video, DJ sets and samples

Cut an intro, a loop or a sample to the tenth of a second and save it as lossless WAV for your video editor or DAW.

MP3 cutter: frequently asked questions

How the audio trimmer works and what it can do.

How do I cut an MP3 online?

Choose the MP3 above, drag the two handles on the waveform to the start and end of the part you want (or type the times), press Play selection to check it, then press Cut audio and download the result as MP3 or WAV.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and cut inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Only the audio engine itself (about 31 MB) is downloaded, once, and then cached by the browser. The audio never leaves your device.

Which formats can I open and save?

You can open any audio or video file your browser hands over, including MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, MP4, MOV and WEBM. The cut is saved as MP3 at 192 kbps or as 16-bit WAV.

Can I cut the audio out of a video?

Yes. Choose the video file; the trimmer keeps only its sound, so the cut is an MP3 or WAV of the part you selected. The picture is dropped.

How precise is the cut?

Start and end are set to a tenth of a second: type the time, or select a handle and move it with the arrow keys. The MP3 format adds a few milliseconds of encoder padding at the start of every file; save as WAV when you need an exact start.

Is it free, and is there a limit?

It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and you can cut as many files as you like. A file can be up to 2 GB. A WAV cut can be up to 30 minutes long; an MP3 cut has no length limit, but long cuts take longer on a phone.

Does cutting reduce the quality?

WAV keeps the decoded audio exactly. MP3 is encoded again at 192 kbps, which is hard to tell apart from the original for most music; if your source is an MP3 and you plan to edit the cut further, save it as WAV.

Can I find out which song is in the part I cut?

Yes. Press Identify this song on the result and the cut opens in the AHA Music song finder, with no second upload. A part with clear music, without talking over it, gives the best match.
