How to use the online metronome
Three steps; it starts the moment you press Start.
1. Set the tempo
Drag the slider or press − and + for any tempo from 20 to 300 BPM, or press Tap tempo in time with a song to take its speed.
2. Set the bar
Choose the time signature (up to 16 beats), click a beat to accent or silence it, and add eighths, triplets, sixteenths or a shuffle feel.
3. Play along
Press Start or the Space bar. Turn on the speed trainer to raise the tempo step by step while you practise.
Tempo markings and BPM
Sheet music often gives an Italian word instead of a number. The metronome shows the marking for the tempo you choose; the ranges are the usual ones, and teachers and editions differ by a few BPM.
| Marking | BPM | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Grave | 20–40 | very slow, solemn |
| Largo | 40–60 | slow and broad |
| Larghetto | 60–66 | rather slow |
| Adagio | 66–76 | slow, at ease |
| Andante | 76–108 | at a walking pace |
| Moderato | 108–120 | moderate |
| Allegro | 120–156 | fast and bright |
| Vivace | 156–176 | lively and fast |
| Presto | 176–200 | very fast |
| Prestissimo | 200–300 | as fast as possible |
What this metronome can do
Steady to the millisecond
Clicks are scheduled ahead on the browser's audio clock, so the beat doesn't wander when the page or the computer is busy.
Tap tempo
Tap along with a song or a drummer and the metronome takes the tempo from your last taps. To measure a recording instead, use the BPM finder.
Accents and odd meters
Any time signature up to 16/8: click a beat to make it accented, normal or silent, for 6/8, 7/8, clave patterns or a click on 2 and 4.
Subdivisions and shuffle
Hear eighth notes, triplets, sixteenths or a shuffle between the beats, quieter than the beat itself.
Speed trainer
Start slow and let the metronome raise the tempo by a few BPM every few bars until it reaches your target — the usual way to build up a hard passage.
Practice timer and keyboard
See how long you have practised, and control everything from the keyboard: Space to start, arrows for the tempo, T to tap.
Online metronome: frequently asked questions
How to use it and how to practise with it.
How do I use an online metronome?
Set the tempo with the slider or the − and + buttons, choose the time signature and press Start (or Space). Play so that your notes land exactly on the clicks; slow down until you can, then raise the tempo.
What BPM should I practise at?
Start at a tempo where you can play the passage without mistakes, often half the final speed, and raise it by 4 to 10 BPM once it feels easy. The speed trainer does this for you every few bars.
How does tap tempo work?
Press Tap tempo (or T) at least twice in time with the music. The tempo is taken from the gaps between your last taps; a pause of more than 2 seconds starts a new count.
How do I set 6/8 or another compound time?
Choose 6 beats over 8 and accent beats 1 and 4, or set 2 beats with triplet subdivision to count the dotted quarter notes. Any signature up to 16 beats works.
What tempo range does it cover?
From 20 to 300 BPM in steps of 1. The Italian tempo marking for the current tempo is shown under the number.
Is the metronome accurate?
Yes. Each click is scheduled on the audio clock ahead of time instead of a timer, so it doesn't drift with the page. Use wired headphones or speakers: Bluetooth adds a delay to everything you hear.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern browser on iPhone, Android, tablets and computers. On iPhone, turn off silent mode if you hear nothing. Keep the page open while you play.
How do I find the tempo of a song?
Tap along with Tap tempo while it plays, or upload the song to the AHA Music BPM finder, which measures the tempo and the key from the file.
