About the formats

M4A – MPEG-4 Audio

An MP4 file with sound only, usually AAC and sometimes Apple Lossless (ALAC). iPhone Voice Memos, GarageBand exports and iTunes Store songs are M4A. Some Windows programs, older car stereos and websites don't accept it.

MP3 – MPEG-1 Audio Layer III

The audio format with the widest support: every phone, player, car stereo and editor opens it. At 192 kbps a minute of stereo music takes about 1.4 MB.

Apple Lossless, WAV and FLAC

If your M4A is Apple Lossless, convert it to FLAC to keep it lossless at a similar size, or to WAV for an editor. Any M4A converted to MP3 is compressed again, so choose 192 kbps or more for music.

Why people convert M4A to MP3

Voice memos for anyone

Send an iPhone voice memo, a lecture or an interview as MP3, which opens on Android and Windows without extra apps.

A song for an older player or car

Many car stereos, MP3 players and USB speakers play MP3 only. Convert your iTunes or GarageBand songs once and copy them over.

Sites and apps that ask for MP3

Upload forms, course platforms and some editors take MP3 and reject M4A. Convert first, then upload the MP3.

Find the song in a recording

Recorded a song with Voice Memos? Convert it and press Identify this song: the audio opens in the AHA Music song finder.

M4A to MP3: frequently asked questions

How the converter works and what it can do.

How do I convert M4A to MP3?

Choose one or more M4A files above, keep MP3 selected (or pick a quality), press Convert to MP3 and download the result. It runs in your browser, with no upload and no queue.

How do I convert an iPhone voice memo to MP3?

In Voice Memos, tap the recording, then the share button, and choose Save to Files. Open this page in Safari, tap the box above, choose the memo from Files and convert it. On a Mac, drag the memo out of Voice Memos onto the box.

Which MP3 quality should I choose?

128 kbps is plenty for speech and keeps voice memos small. For music, 192 kbps sounds like the original M4A for most people; 320 kbps keeps the most detail.

Does converting M4A to MP3 lose quality?

Both are compressed formats, so the MP3 is encoded again. At 192 kbps or more the difference is very hard to hear. If the M4A is Apple Lossless, choose FLAC or WAV to keep every detail.

Can I convert songs from Apple Music?

No. Songs downloaded from Apple Music for offline listening are copy-protected and can't be converted by any browser tool. Songs bought on the iTunes Store are plain M4A files and convert normally.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Only the audio engine (about 31 MB) is downloaded, once, and your recordings never leave your device.

Can I convert several M4A files at once?

Yes, up to 20 files at a time, each up to 2 GB. They are converted one after another with the same settings, and each gets its own download button.

Are the title, artist and album kept?

Yes. Tags such as title, artist and album are copied into the MP3. The cover picture is not copied.
