About the formats

FLAC – Free Lossless Audio Codec

FLAC packs the sound of a CD or a master without losing anything, at about half the size of WAV. Some DJ software, CDJs, samplers, older editors and CD programs still don't read it.

WAV – uncompressed PCM

The same samples, unpacked. A 16-bit FLAC converted to WAV is bit-for-bit the same sound, about twice the size: around 10.6 MB a minute at 44.1 kHz stereo.

24-bit FLAC, MP3 and M4A

The WAV here is 16-bit, like a CD; a 24-bit FLAC loses its extra bits, so keep the FLAC as your master. MP3 and M4A are the small files for listening. WAV files can be up to 30 minutes long.

Why people convert FLAC to WAV

DJ software and CDJs

Some DJ software, CDJs and controllers read WAV but not FLAC. Convert your tracks once and load them without errors.

Burning an audio CD

An audio CD holds 16-bit, 44.1 kHz audio. Converting a CD-quality FLAC to WAV gives a burning program exactly what it expects, with no loss.

Samplers and editors

Hardware samplers and some audio and video editors import WAV only. Convert a lossless track to use it there.

FLAC to WAV: frequently asked questions

How the converter works and what it can do.

How do I convert FLAC to WAV?

Choose one or more FLAC files above, keep WAV selected, press Convert to WAV and download the results. It runs in your browser, with no upload and no queue.

Is FLAC to WAV lossless?

Yes for 16-bit FLAC, such as CD rips: the WAV holds exactly the same samples. The WAV here is 16-bit, so a 24-bit FLAC is reduced to 16 bits; keep the FLAC as your master.

What sample rate does the WAV have?

The FLAC's own sample rate, usually 44.1 kHz for CD rips, with the same number of channels.

Why is the WAV bigger than the FLAC?

FLAC packs the samples without losing any; WAV stores them unpacked. A WAV is usually about twice the size of the FLAC it came from.

Can I convert a whole album at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 files at a time, each up to 2 GB, and save them together with Download all. Each WAV can be up to 30 minutes long.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Only the audio engine (about 31 MB) is downloaded, once; your music never leaves your device.

Are tags kept in the WAV?

Title and artist are copied where the WAV format can hold them, but many players don't show tags in WAV files. Keep the FLAC if you rely on its tags and cover.

Is it free?

Yes. It needs no account, adds no watermark and does not limit how many files you convert.
