What converts well

The note detector hears pitches, not instruments. Clear, uncluttered recordings give the cleanest MIDI.

RecordingWhat to expect
Solo piano or guitarVery good: chords and melody, including fast passages.
Singing or hummingGood for the melody. Turn on Melody only, and use Low sensitivity if breaths become notes.
One melodic instrument (flute, violin, sax)Very good, with slides and vibrato kept as separate pitches where they are wide.
Bass lineGood, from about E1 up. Very low notes on small speakers or phone recordings may be missed.
A full band or a mixed songA rough sketch: every instrument becomes piano notes, and drums add stray notes. Melody only helps to pull out the tune.
Drums onlyNot suitable: drums have no clear pitch, so the MIDI will not be a drum part.

What this converter does

Polyphonic notes

Chords and several voices at once, not only a single melody, using Spotify's open-source Basic Pitch model.

Piano roll and playback

See every note before you download and play them back next to the original recording.

Settings that apply instantly

Sensitivity, the shortest note and Melody only re-read the result at once: the recording is not analysed again.

Any audio or video file

MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG and the sound of MP4 or MOV videos, up to 2 GB. The first 10 minutes are converted.

A standard MIDI file

One track with the tempo you set and note velocities from the loudness, ready for Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, GarageBand, MuseScore and others.

Private and free

The model runs in your browser, so your recording never leaves your device. No account, no limit on the number of files.

Audio to MIDI FAQ

Converting recordings to MIDI, answered

How do I convert an MP3 to MIDI?

Open the MP3 on this page. The notes are found in your browser and shown on a piano roll. Check them with Play the notes, then press Download MIDI to save a .mid file. WAV, FLAC, M4A and videos work the same way.

Is this audio to MIDI converter free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. Each file is converted up to its first 10 minutes.

Can it convert chords and several instruments?

Yes, it is polyphonic: chords and several notes at once are detected. It does not tell instruments apart, so a band recording becomes one track of notes. For the tune alone, turn on Melody only.

Can I convert my voice or humming to MIDI?

Yes. Record yourself singing or humming the melody, open the file here and turn on Melody only. Each sung note becomes a MIDI note you can play with any instrument in your DAW.

Why are there extra or missing notes?

Reverb, drums and dense mixes create notes that are not there, and quiet notes can be missed. Lower the sensitivity or raise the shortest note to remove stray notes; raise the sensitivity to catch quiet ones. Clean recordings of one instrument give the best result.

What does the tempo setting change?

The notes keep their real timing whatever you choose. The tempo is written into the file so that bars and beats line up in your DAW: set it to the song's BPM if you know it.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. The note detector, Spotify's Basic Pitch, runs inside your browser on your device. The recording is never sent to our servers.

Which programs can open the MIDI file?

Any program that reads standard MIDI files: Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, GarageBand, Cubase, Reaper, MuseScore, Synthesia and online piano apps.
