How to convert an audio file

Three steps, all in your browser.

1. Choose your files

Drop one or more audio or video files, up to 2 GB each and up to 20 at a time. They are read on your device.

2. Pick the output

MP3 at 192 kbps is chosen for you. Switch to WAV or FLAC for editing, or M4A for iPhones.

3. Convert and download

Press Convert. Each file keeps its name with the new extension, and its title and artist tags.

What it converts

Files you can convert

Audio: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF and others. Video: MP4, MOV, M4V, WEBM, MKV and 3GP, whose sound track is kept and picture dropped.

Formats you get

MP3 at 128, 192 or 320 kbps; WAV (16-bit PCM); M4A (AAC at 256 kbps); FLAC (lossless). WAV and FLAC files can be up to 30 minutes long.

Which format to choose

MP3 when the file has to play everywhere or be small. WAV for music programs, video editors and samplers. FLAC to keep every detail at about half the size of WAV. M4A for iPhones and iTunes.

What people convert audio for

A file that won't play

A voice message, a game sound or a download in a format your phone, car or program can't open becomes an MP3 that plays everywhere.

Files for editing

Music programs, video editors and transcription tools often want WAV. Convert once and import without errors.

Smaller files

WAV and FLAC recordings shrink to a fraction of their size as MP3, small enough to send or keep on a phone.

Find the song in a recording

After converting, press Identify this song: the audio opens in the AHA Music song finder without choosing the file again.

Audio converter: frequently asked questions

How the converter works and what it can do.

How do I convert an audio file?

Choose one or more files above, pick MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC, press Convert and download the result. The conversion runs in your browser, with no upload and no queue.

Which formats are supported?

Most audio and video files your browser can open: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV and more. The result is MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Only the audio engine (about 31 MB) is downloaded, once; your files never leave your device.

Does converting lower the quality?

Converting to WAV or FLAC keeps the sound exactly as it is in the source. Converting to MP3 or M4A compresses it; at 192 kbps or more the difference is very hard to hear. No conversion can add quality the source doesn't have.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 files, each up to 2 GB; they are converted one after another with the same settings, and each gets its own download button.

Is there a length limit?

MP3 and M4A have no length limit. WAV and FLAC files can be up to 30 minutes long, because the result is held in your browser's memory.

Are tags kept?

Yes. Tags such as title, artist and album are copied to the new file. Cover pictures are not copied.

Is there a converter for my exact formats?

Yes, the pages listed below each open with the right output chosen and explain the formats involved, for example M4A to MP3, WAV to MP3, OGG to MP3 or MP4 to WAV. They all use this same converter.
