How to make audio louder

Three steps, in the browser.

Choose a file

Drop an audio or video file of up to 2 GB. The page measures its loudness (LUFS) and its peak level.

Set the level

Boost with the slider or a preset (6 dB is 200%), or pick a loudness target. You see the loudness you will get before you start.

Save it

Download MP3, WAV, M4A or the video with its new sound, or send the file on to the song finder or the audio trimmer.

How loud is loud enough?

Loudness is measured in LUFS: the closer to 0, the louder. Peak level only shows the single loudest moment, so two files with the same peak can sound very different.

-9 LUFSLoud pop and dance masters. Little room is left for a boost.
-14 LUFSSpotify, YouTube and Tidal play music at about this level and turn louder tracks down.
-16 LUFSApple Music and most podcasts. A good level for phones and laptops.
-23 LUFSTV and radio in Europe (EBU R128). Sounds quiet next to music.
-30 LUFSTypical of quiet phone recordings, lectures and voice memos.

What the volume booster does

Measures before it changes

You see the file's loudness in LUFS, its true peak and how much room is left, plus a suggested boost.

Up to % without clipping

The boost is followed by a peak limiter at -1 dB, so a big boost makes the file louder instead of cracking.

Normalize to a standard

Two-pass loudness normalization to -14, -16 or -23 LUFS, the same measure streaming services and broadcasters use.

Keeps the video

MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV and WEBM files up to 400 MB keep their picture untouched; only the sound is replaced.

MP3, WAV or M4A

MP3 at 192 kbps, 16-bit WAV up to 30 minutes, or M4A (AAC 192 kbps) for iPhone and Mac.

Stays on your device

The file is processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account and no daily limit.

Volume booster FAQ

Loudness, distortion, video and privacy.

How do I make an audio file louder?

Choose the file, keep Boost selected and move the slider or pick a preset; the suggested value brings a quiet file to about -16 LUFS. Press Make it louder and download the result. Nothing is uploaded.

Will boosting the volume distort the sound?

Not by clipping: every boost goes through a limiter that holds peaks under -1 dB. A very large boost on a file that is already loud flattens its loudest moments, which can sound squashed; the page warns you when the limiter will be reached.

Can I increase the volume of a video?

Yes. MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV and WEBM files up to 400 MB keep their picture (it is copied, not re-encoded) and get the new sound. Other video formats, or larger files, are saved as audio.

What is the difference between Boost and Normalize?

Boost changes the volume by the amount you choose: above 100% louder, below 100% quieter. Normalize measures the whole file and sets it to a loudness target, turning it up or down, so several files end up equally loud.

Which LUFS target should I choose?

-14 LUFS for music for Spotify, YouTube or Tidal, -16 LUFS for podcasts and listening on phones, -23 LUFS for broadcast in Europe (EBU R128). For a quiet recording, -16 LUFS is a safe choice.

Which formats can I open and save?

Most audio and video files up to 2 GB open: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM and others. You can save MP3 (192 kbps), WAV (16-bit, up to 30 minutes), M4A (AAC 192 kbps) or, for MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV and WEBM, the video itself.

Are my files uploaded? Is it free?

No upload: the audio engine (ffmpeg) is downloaded once and runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. It is free, needs no account and has no daily limit.

Why does my file still sound quiet after a boost?

If its peaks were already near 0 dB, the limiter keeps the loudest moments in place and the rest only gets a little louder. Check the readout: a file at -14 LUFS or above is already as loud as streaming music, and the volume of your device or player is the next thing to check.
