How to find the BPM of a song by tapping

Three steps, no file needed.

Play the song

Play it anywhere: a speaker, a streaming app, a video. Listen for the kick drum or the beat you would clap to.

Tap along

Tap the pad or press any key on every beat, for 10 to 20 taps. After a pause of 3 seconds the count starts again.

Read the tempo

The BPM is the average of all your taps. If it shows half or double what you hear, use ½× or 2×, then open it in the metronome.

What the tap BPM counter does

Every tap counts

The tempo is the average of all gaps in the run, so it gets more exact the longer you tap, to 0.1 BPM.

How steady you are

The page tells you whether your taps were steady and warns you when you start speeding up or slowing down.

Half and double tempo

Tapped the half-time feel? One button doubles the result, another halves it.

Straight to a metronome

Open the free metronome at the tempo you tapped, to practise or play along from 20 to 300 BPM.

Mouse, touch or keyboard

Tap the pad on a phone, click it, or press any key while the tool is on screen. Double triggers are ignored.

Or let the file decide

If you have the audio file, the BPM finder measures the tempo, key and energy without any tapping.

Tap BPM FAQ

Accuracy, half-time feel, heart rate and more.

How do I find the BPM of a song by tapping?

Play the song, then tap the pad or press any key on every beat. After two taps you get a first reading; after 10 to 20 taps it settles. The number is the average of all your taps.

How accurate is tap tempo?

It depends on how evenly you tap. Because every gap is averaged, 20 steady taps usually land within 1 BPM. The steadiness reading tells you when your taps were uneven.

Why does the BPM show half or double the tempo?

Many songs can be felt at two speeds, for example trap at 140 BPM with a half-time beat at 70. Tap the beat you hear, then use ½× or 2× to get the tempo you need.

When does the count start again?

After a pause of 3 seconds without a tap (you can choose 2, 3 or 5 seconds), or when you press Reset.

Can I use the keyboard?

Yes. Any key taps while the tool is on screen and no other field is in use. Holding a key down counts once.

Can I measure my heart rate with it?

You can tap along with your pulse to count beats per minute. It is not a medical measurement; use a proper device for anything health related.

How do I find the BPM without tapping?

Use the BPM finder: choose the audio file and it detects the tempo and key automatically, in your browser.

Can I play a click at the tempo I tapped?

Yes. Press Open in the metronome: our metronome opens at that tempo, with accents, subdivisions and a speed trainer, from 20 to 300 BPM.
