How to use the Camelot wheel

Three steps to a harmonic mix.

Find the key

Get the key of the track that is playing: from your DJ software, or with the key detector, which gives the Camelot code too.

Tap it on the wheel

The wheel lights up the keys that mix well with it: the same number, one step either way, or the other ring.

Pick the next track

Choose a track in one of those keys with a close tempo, then listen to the overlap before you commit.

Moves explained

Each move says what it does: same key, one step, relative major or minor, diagonal, energy boost or a semitone lift.

Three notations

Camelot code, key name and Open Key side by side, so it matches Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor or Mixed In Key.

Key and BPM tools next to it

Don't know a track's key? The key detector finds it from the file; the BPM finder and tap BPM give the tempo.

Camelot wheel FAQ

Harmonic mixing, codes and moves.

What is the Camelot wheel?

A chart of the 24 musical keys arranged like a clock: 12 numbers round the circle of fifths, with B for major keys on the outside and A for minor keys inside. Neighbouring positions are keys that sound good together.

Which keys mix well together?

From any code: the same code, one number up or down with the same letter, or the same number with the other letter. From 8A that is 8A, 7A, 9A and 8B.

What do the A and B mean?

A is a minor key, B a major key. The same number with A and B are relative keys: they share the same notes, for example 8A (A minor) and 8B (C major).

What is an energy boost?

Moving two numbers up with the same letter, for example 8A to 10A. It raises the energy noticeably; use it at a peak, not for every mix.

What is the difference between Camelot and Open Key?

They are the same idea with different numbering: Open Key starts at C major = 1d and A minor = 1m, Camelot at 8B and 8A. The chart lists both.

How do I find the key of a song?

Use the key detector: choose the audio file and it shows the key, the Camelot code and how sure it is, in your browser.

Do I have to follow the wheel strictly?

No. It shortlists tracks that are likely to blend. Tempo, phrasing, vocals and basslines still decide; always listen to the overlap.

Does changing the tempo change the key?

Yes, unless your player's key lock is on. Speeding a track up about 6% raises it one semitone, which moves it 7 steps on the wheel.
