Press Start, allow the microphone and play a string. The tuner shows the note and how many cents you are off.
Press Start and allow the microphone.
Tap a string to hear its note and tune to it by ear.
How to tune a guitar online
Three steps; start with the thickest string.
1. Start the tuner
Choose your instrument and tuning (standard EADGBE is set for guitar), press Start and allow the microphone. Hold the phone or laptop close to the guitar.
2. Play one string
Pluck a string firmly and let it ring. Auto finds which string it is; the needle shows how far off it is, and the green zone is ±5 cents.
3. Turn the peg
Too low: tighten the string. Too high: loosen it a little, then come back up to the note. When it says In tune, move to the next string, then check them all once more.
Tunings and string notes
The notes of each string, from the lowest (thickest) to the highest. The number is the octave: E2 is the low E string of a guitar, A4 is the A at Hz.

What this tuner can do
Guitar, bass, ukulele, violin and more
Standard, Drop D, DADGAD, open and lowered guitar tunings; 4- and 5-string bass; ukulele, violin, viola, cello, mandolin and banjo — or chromatic mode for any instrument or voice.
Exact to the cent
Besides the needle, the tuner prints how many cents you are off and the frequency in Hz, so you can see a 2-cent difference that a needle hides.
Finds the string by itself
In Auto mode you just play: the tuner picks the string closest to the note it hears. Turn Auto off to tune one string to a fixed note.
Tune by ear with reference tones
Tap a string to hear its note, for tuning in a noisy room or for training your ear.
A4 calibration
Tune to A = 440 Hz or anything from 415 to 466 Hz, for 432 Hz, an orchestra at 442 Hz or a piano that is slightly flat.
Private and free
The microphone is analysed in your browser while the tuner runs. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent anywhere, and there is no app to install.
Online guitar tuner: frequently asked questions
How to tune and how the tuner works.
How do I tune my guitar with this online tuner?
Press Start tuning and allow the microphone. Play the low E string and turn its peg until the tuner says In tune, then do the same for A, D, G, B and high E. Check all six once more at the end, because tuning one string changes the tension on the others.
What are the notes of standard guitar tuning?
From the thickest to the thinnest string: E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4 (often written EADGBE). Drop D lowers only the low E to D; half step down lowers every string by one semitone.
Can I tune a ukulele, bass or violin?
Yes. Choose the instrument and the tuning from the list: bass (4 or 5 strings, Drop D), ukulele (high G, low G, baritone), violin, viola, cello, mandolin and banjo. Chromatic mode names any note, for any instrument.
How accurate is it?
The tuner reads the pitch to about one cent and shows the value. In tune means within ±5 cents, closer than most people can hear. Play one string at a time, close to the microphone, in a quiet room.
Why does the reading jump or show the wrong string?
Usually another string is ringing or there is noise. Mute the other strings, pluck firmly and let the note sustain. On an electric guitar use a clean sound: distortion adds overtones. If Auto picks the wrong string, tap the string you want to tune it on its own.
What is A4 = 440 Hz, and should I change it?
It is the pitch of the A above middle C that all other notes are tuned from; 440 Hz is the standard. Change it only to match another instrument, such as a piano or an orchestra at 442 Hz. Any value from 415 to 466 Hz works.
Is my microphone audio recorded or sent?
No. The sound is analysed in your browser while the tuner runs and is never recorded, stored or uploaded. Press Stop or close the tab and the microphone is turned off.
The tuner doesn't hear anything. What can I do?
Allow the microphone (click the lock or microphone icon in the address bar), make sure the right microphone is the system default and nothing else is using it. On a phone keep this page open in front; on iPhone use Safari or Chrome.
