How to extract audio from a video

Three steps, all in your browser.

1. Choose your videos

Drop one or more videos from your phone, camera or computer, up to 2 GB each. They are read on your device.

2. Pick the audio format

MP3 at 192 kbps is chosen for you. WAV or FLAC keep the sound exactly for editing; M4A suits iPhones.

3. Extract and download

Press Convert. You get one audio file per video, named after the video.

How the audio is extracted

The picture is dropped, the sound kept

A video file holds a picture track and a sound track. The extractor reads the sound track and writes it to an audio file; the picture never leaves the video, so a long clip becomes a small file.

What sound is inside a video

Phone and camera videos (MP4, MOV) usually carry AAC; screen recordings and browser downloads (WEBM) carry Opus or Vorbis; MKV can carry almost anything. The extractor reads all of them.

Which audio format to save

MP3 to listen or share; at 192 kbps a minute takes about 1.4 MB. WAV or FLAC to edit, transcribe or sample (up to 30 minutes per file). M4A (AAC at 256 kbps) for iPhones and iTunes.

What people extract audio for

The song in a video

Extract the music from a clip, then press Identify this song: the audio opens in the AHA Music song finder without choosing the file again.

Talks, lessons and interviews

Keep only the sound of a recorded lecture, meeting or interview to listen to on the way or send to a transcription service.

Sound for a new project

Take a clip's sound as WAV for a podcast, a video edit, a remix or a sample library.

Music from your own videos

Save a concert, a rehearsal or a performance you filmed as audio for your phone, car or music player.

Audio extractor: frequently asked questions

How audio is extracted and what you can do with it.

How do I extract audio from a video?

Choose one or more videos above, keep MP3 selected (or pick WAV, M4A or FLAC), press Convert and download the audio. It runs in your browser, with no upload and no queue.

Which videos can I extract audio from?

Video files your browser can open, including MP4, MOV, M4V, WEBM, MKV and 3GP, up to 2 GB each and up to 20 at a time.

Does extracting lower the audio quality?

WAV and FLAC keep the sound exactly as it is in the video. MP3 and M4A compress it again; at 192 kbps or more the difference is very hard to hear.

Can I extract audio from a YouTube or TikTok link?

No, the extractor only reads video files on your device. To find out which song plays in a YouTube, TikTok or Instagram video, paste the link into the AHA Music video song finder at aha-music.com/url.

Can I extract only part of the audio?

Extract the whole sound first, then press Cut a part next to the result: it opens in the AHA Music MP3 cutter, where you choose the start and end on the waveform.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The audio is extracted inside your browser by a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Only the audio engine (about 31 MB) is downloaded, once; your videos never leave your device.

Can I separate the voice from the music?

No. The extractor keeps the video's whole sound track as it is; separating vocals from music needs a different tool.

Is it free?

Yes. It needs no account, adds no watermark and does not limit how many videos you convert.
