Why SoundCloud is different
A SoundCloud upload is often a DJ set or a radio show: one file, dozens of songs, no tracklist in the description. The question is not "what song is this" but "what are all the songs", so the scan has to run across the whole file and report positions.
Mixes blend tracks into each other and are often pitched to match tempo. Recognition still works on most of the set, but a transition of two songs or a steep pitch change can produce a gap in the list; the extension on the playing track fills those in.
Private tracks and tracks behind a download gate are not reachable from a link; anything you can play in the browser can be identified with the extension.
