The reverse singing challenge

Sing a line backwards so that, reversed, it sounds forwards. Four steps:

  1. Record a short line of a song you know (3–8 words work best).
  2. Listen to it reversed a few times and learn the backwards sounds.
  3. Record yourself singing those backwards sounds.
  4. Reverse your attempt: if it sounds like the original line, you did it.

Reverse audio FAQ

Recording, files, the challenge and privacy.

How do I reverse audio?

Choose the file, pick MP3, WAV or M4A and press Reverse. Or press Record, say something, and press Stop: the reversed version plays right away.

How do I do the reverse singing challenge?

Record a short line, listen to it reversed, then record yourself singing the reversed sounds and press Reverse it back. If the result sounds like the original line, you got it.

Can I reverse a song or a video?

Yes. Any audio or video file opens; its sound is reversed, up to the first 10 minutes.

Why is there a length limit?

Reversing has to hold the whole sound in your browser's memory before the first reversed second can be written, so files are reversed up to 10 minutes.

Is my recording uploaded or saved?

No. The microphone recording and the reversing stay in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere or kept after you close the page.

Which format should I save?

MP3 for sharing and messages, WAV if you will edit it further, M4A for iPhone and Mac.

Are there hidden messages in songs played backwards?

Some artists recorded deliberate backwards parts (backmasking), and people hear words in others by chance. Reverse the song and listen for yourself.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Recording needs microphone permission in the browser; files work in any modern mobile browser.
