Ukulele string notes and frequencies
A soprano, concert or tenor ukulele is tuned G C E A: from the string nearest your chin, G4, C4 (middle C), E4 and A4 (440 Hz). The G string is higher than the C next to it, so the strings do not run from low to high. Baritone ukuleles are tuned D G B E, like the top four strings of a guitar.
| String | Note | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| 4th | G4 | 392.00 Hz |
| 3rd | C4 | 261.63 Hz |
| 2nd | E4 | 329.63 Hz |
| 1st | A4 | 440.00 Hz |
Frequencies at A4 = 440 Hz; change A4 in the tuner and the table follows.
Other ukulele tunings in the tuner: Low G (G3 C4 E4 A4); Baritone (D3 G3 B3 E4); D tuning (ADF#B) (A4 D4 F#4 B4).
Ukulele tunings
Standard tuning is "re-entrant": the 4th string, G4, sits between the C and the E in pitch. That gives the ukulele its bright, close-voiced strum. Many players learn the open strings with the phrase "My Dog Has Fleas", sung on G, C, E and A.
Low G replaces the high G with the G an octave lower (G3). The instrument gets a fuller bottom end and a continuous range for fingerpicked melodies. It needs a thicker 4th string made for low G; a high-G string tuned down an octave goes slack.
D tuning, A D F# B, is the whole set one step higher. It appears in older songbooks and suits some sopranos. Baritone ukuleles use D G B E, the same intervals a fourth lower, so guitar chord shapes carry over.
How to tune a ukulele
- Press Start tuning and allow the microphone. Hold the ukulele a hand's width from the phone or laptop.
- Pluck the G string (4th, nearest your chin) and let it ring. Turn the peg until the tuner says In tune.
- Tune the C, E and A strings the same way. Auto mode picks the string from the note you play.
- Check all four strings again. New nylon or fluorocarbon strings stretch and go flat for the first few days.
New strings and staying in tune
Ukulele strings are nylon, fluorocarbon or Nylgut and stretch far more than steel. After a restring, tune up, pull each string gently away from the fretboard and retune; expect to repeat it for a few days. If one string keeps dropping, check that it is wound neatly on the peg and that a friction peg is tight enough to hold.
Ukulele tuner: frequently asked questions
What are the notes of a ukulele?
In standard tuning, G4 C4 E4 A4 from the 4th string (nearest your chin) to the 1st. The C is middle C and the A is the A above it, 440 Hz.
What is the difference between high G and low G?
High G (G4) is the traditional re-entrant tuning; low G (G3) is an octave lower and needs a thicker string. Chord shapes stay the same, only the 4th string sounds lower. Choose Low G in the Tuning menu if your ukulele has a low-G string.
Do soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use the same tuning?
Yes, all three are usually tuned G C E A, and tenors are often strung with low G. Only the baritone is different: D G B E.
Why does my ukulele go out of tune so fast?
New strings stretch for several days, and changes in temperature and humidity move the pitch too. Tune before every session; once the strings have settled they hold much longer.
Can I tune a ukulele without a tuner?
Yes. Get the A string right first (tap A4 under the tuner to hear it). Then the E string at the 5th fret should match the open A, the C string at the 4th fret the open E, and the G string at the 2nd fret the open A.
Does the tuner work on a phone?
Yes, in Chrome, Safari or Edge on Android and iPhone. Allow the microphone when asked; the sound is analysed in the browser and nothing is recorded or sent.
